Cello Works

Our growing catalog of cello works features the only currently available edition of the complete Opus II sonatas of Cervetto, two delightful sets of salon pieces by Georg Goltermann, and works by Haydn and Mozart arranged for small cello ensemble.

Giacob Basevi Cervetto

Twelve Sonatas for Cello and Continuo, Opus II Giacob Basevi detto Cervetto was born in Verona in 1690 and died in London in 1783. His Opus II, Twelve Solos for a Violoncello with a Thorough Bass for the Harpsichord, was published in 1750.

Georg Goltermann

Trios #52 and #97 for Baryton, Viola, and Cello, arranged for 3 celli
Haydn's patron, Prince Nikolaus Eszterhazy, was an enthusiastic amateur performer on the baryton, a sort of bass viola d'amore, and for him Haydn wrote more than two hundred trios. Few people play the baryton today, but the trios work very well for three celli.

Joseph Haydn

Divertimento 1 for 2 Clarinets and Basset Horn, arranged for 3 celli
Adagio for 3 Clarinets and 2 Basset Horns, arranged for 5 celli

Starting around 1783 Mozart wrote a number of pieces for the clarinetist Johann Stadtler, including the clarinet concerto, the the clarinet quintet, and a number of pieces for clarinet ensemble. These works sound very good for cello ensemble.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

Danses Allemandes, Series 1 and 2
Georg Goltermann (1824-1898) is best known for his 8 cello concerti, the 4th of which is still much used today as a student concerto. He wrote a great deal of music for cello, including many salon pieces. These two sets of German dances are fine examples.
